Children don't normally
have trouble sleeping, so if your child suddenly can't go to sleep,
or wakes up during the night, it needs some investigating.
If the doctor can't
find anything wrong, talk to your child and try to find a reason. Are
they worried about something? Are they having trouble with their
schoolwork? Are they being bullied? Some kids tend to clam up about
their problems, so be persistent until you get to the bottom of the
problem.
If there seems to be no
valid reason for you child's sleep problem, it could be just a
temporary setback. Make sure you child's room is comfortable and
quiet. Keep any TV, mobile phones or computer games out of the
bedroom as these can keep kids awake long past their bedtime. The
bright light from these devices can interrupt their sleep cycle and
cause insomnia.
Child sleep disorders can be overcome with a bit of patience and understanding. Make sure you nip them in the bud before they become a bad habit.
